Doctor Who and me

About four months ago my friend Patty talked me into watching Doctor who on Netfilx. I have heard about this show before, and never really wanted to watch it because I thought it was for nerds. Well I am now hooked and obsessed with this show. Yeah I watched all 7 seasons (not including the classics) in one week. So I must be a nerd and nerds are cool (kind of a doctor who reference).

Let me try to explain what Doctor Who is about for all of you who have no idea what I'm talking about. First of all it is a British show that has recently came to the US. It is about this Time lord (The Doctor) who is an alien with two hearts, and has lived for
over 800 years. When ever he dies he regenerates into another body, and we are on the
11th Doctor. He travels in time and space in a spaceship that is disguised as a 50's police box called the T.A.R.D.I.S. He likes the human race and comes to visit us often. He takes up companions to travel with him usually pretty young girls. I found this is more because it keeps his humanity and not to go crazy with rage. His travels take him to places where he must set off into an adventure to help aliens and humans alike.

You may have heard that this year 2013 is Doctor who's 50th year Anniversary. Yeah I'm so behind 50 years behind! OK so there was a 16 year break between classic Doctor (1964) who and the newer stuff, which started in 2005 (it started with the ninth Doctor).

This show really has to be experienced. You really become close to these characters and love everything they go through. I have cried and laughed out loud more times that I can think while watching Doctor Who. There is a sense of pride in humanity, after watching this show that you are much more than you think. There is also love and compassion that is shown through all types of creatures. Its so much more than a show, its an experience.

Drive-extra credit

In the movie Drive the audience can see that the main character has a secret. he gets calls in the middle of the night asking to help with a robbery; though during the day he is just a regular man who works in a garage, and has a side job of a stuntman. Something in his past made him into the best driver for both get always and stunts, but the question is where and how did he learn it? His secrets make everyone wanting to know what happens next, what other secrets will there be and will we ever be told? The secrets keep the audience wanting more.

Also in public the man is very calm and does not say much. Yet throughout the movie another side of him appears of rage, and the readiness to kill ones who threaten him of his friends. Where does this rage come from? He definitely has a shadow side and it’s terrifying. How can he kill so brutal and without a thought? He must have killed before, that caused his rage to come out. It is very unsettling to see this calm man that anyone could trust, become so violent so fast. He definitely has a secret, which has us guessing what it is throughout the movie.

The Concert Experience

One day you see that your favorite band is going on tour, and they are coming to you! OH I'm so going no matter what, is your first thought. So you buy a ticket and wait in excitement for the day to come. The wait is excruciatingly long even though it’s just a month or two it seems like eternity. In the mean time the band may come out with new material and you listen to them as much as you can until you know every word.

This band means more to you than any others; not only do you listen to their music and follow them on social networks, there is a personal connection with the members and their music. You may not have met them or be their friend, but you are a fan who cares for them and supports what they do. Their songs may have a special meaning to you, which helps you through the day or even put a smile on your face. They have now become more than just a band; they have become part of your life. To see them live with others who feel the same way as you, and to support your band is the best feeling.

Finally the concert has arrived; and knowing that you get to see your idols has you even more excited. As you stand in the crowd waiting for the show to begin your heart begins to race. Then the lights go down and screams start to rise. Your blood boils with excitement as you see your band step out into the spotlight and sing your favorite song. You cannot help but to sing along and jump to the drum beats. How amazing are they live? You never want the night to end as they sing all the best songs. As they come to the end of the show you are, sweating and tired and aching all over. Though your whole body hurts you would never trade this night for anything. You know that you could do this again in a heartbeat. Oh you hope they come back soon and you know you will be there once again.

Concerts are great stress relievers and they give a sensation of being high when there is screaming dancing and singing. On that note I’m addicted to concerts and they help me to let out my stress from the months before. I recommended at least one concert every three months. Though for me I try to have one concert a month (usually local bands). I enjoy going out seeing familiar faces and to dance my stress away. Is it wrong? I do not think so do you?

The Yellow Wall Paper

When I first read the yellow wallpaper, it was last semester in an online class so we did not discuss it at all. Which I now see was heartbreaking. I did not get the full effect of the story. Everything that we talked about in this class, I did not get while reading it the first time. Such as her being in an insane asylum or who her "family" really was around her. Also the fact that her husband/doctor had died from seeing her go insane. So many events in the story are lost if one does not discuss it with others. While reading, a reader is lazy and will just hold the first impression that he or she comes across. Once a peace is discussed and different perspectives rise; it  shines a whole new light on the story.Seeing what others got from the reading was so much more interesting than the actual read. I simply thought that she was just a sick woman who was living in a vacation home, trying to get better from depression. But talking about in class really brought out so much more for the story. Talking about it made me and probably others appreciate it more.

Can we really pull the author into this story, and see that the main character is her? Or at least she knows somewhat of the feelings and images that the main character has. I believe so; I believe that she took an event in her past and made it more interesting. I mean if you really understand what is going on in the story it is really good. Seeing the objects around her and realizing how one could go insane by just being in an enclosed room with that wall paper. There is a personal connection that is made, one that brings this peace to become so interesting.

Campbell quote

Campbell once said a quote "myths are pubic dreams; dreams are private myths". This quote really stuck out to me on how true that it can be. I know for myself my dreams never make sense when I think about it, but in the dream I think logically towards impossible things. Anything can happen in a dream and anything can happen in a myth. Myths can only go as far as our mind will go, and a mind has everything and anywhere to go to. There are no limits to an imagination, and therefore there are no limits to myths. These two links can not be separated. Our subconscious mind brings out the impossible thoughts that lead to the fascination of a great myth.

How amazing is it that the mind can have dreams tape into your subconscious and bring about this myth that can bring an emotional response. There are also studies that have been done on dreams, about what they mean. I know some people who are very serious about knowing what dreams mean. There are books out there that will show anyone what their dreams mean. I find it funny, because, most of the time my dreams do not even make sense to me or to others. I do not want to know what they mean; it’s just my mind at work trying to figure out this thing called life. Dreams are just ways our minds try to understand life, and everything in it. To help cope with situations by bringing about scenarios that help solve problems.

I asked family members “If dreams are a wish your heart makes; what is a nightmare?” They all basically answered somewhere along the lines of “something that your heart does not want.” I believe they are correct, Dreams show us what we are afraid of. You can not have good without bad and vice versa. Same goes for dreams, not all myths are good and not all dreams are good, but either way there is a lesson to be learned.

Revising 101

Revising is not my favorite part of the writing process. Once you have written a piece that you like and believe is written correctly; you find out how many mistakes you really made. In this class I have been taught many good ways to revise on my own, such as Reading it out loud to yourself or others to see which words need to be changed to flow better. Reading your paper from bottom to top can really help in the revising process as well. Also with this class I am much more aware of punctuation. And Punctuation was never something that I was called on throughout my college years.

With going to school to become a secondary education teacher this is something that I really need to focus on. I need to teach my students how to correctly punctuate; that way they are ready for college and not struggling like I am now. I was never called out on my punctuation during high school. I never really thought I was making many mistakes, which I think was very poor on my high school teachers.

Being in college and taking classes that are above 101 and 102, most mistakes are minor such as punctuation. There are so many rules to punctuation and so many can be broken. To one person your sentence is correct but to another it is not. So really knowing which punctuation is used in what kind of sentence is the trick. You know what you want to say just say it so it gives the correct meaning. Punctuation can change what is being said in a sentence, so beware.

Some rules to keep in mind during Revision are:

  • A colon {:} is used for Emphasis in a sentence
  • A comma {,} is used to separate clauses
  • A semicolon {;} is used to join big ideas
  • A dash {--} is used to add an Idea (minor)

A Place to Stand Blog

The novel A Place to Stand is an autobiography of Jimmy Santiago Baca. The novel recalls his life while growing up and how wrong events throughout his life have gone. He has to survive on his own in this world (starting at a young age), after his family abandons him. Jimmy does not always make the right decisions, but at the time, it is what is given to him. His anger with the world giving up on him upsets him more than anything. With Drugs, drinking and boredom, nothing good can come out of it.

First off let me say what a good concept of a story this is, to tell about one’s own life so that his children may know the true. He really gives the emotional feel to all of the horrible things that had gone on in his life, and let us understand why he did the things that he did. For anyone willing to read this, I would say prepare yourself for an emotional toll.

For myself I do not think I would recommend this book to others, just because of the emotional blow that comes along with reading this autobiography. I felt depressed and could not sit for long periods of time reading this. It seems like anything that was good in his life, was taken away his grandparents, his lovers, his job. Nothing seemed to work out for him in the end. His life was just one bad thing after another, and after awhile of reading it I starting to get mad and sad at Jimmy. On one Hand I was sad for him for going through so many horrible things while just a child, but mad at him for still continuing on this acts that were wrong in the first place.

This novel is written for the ones who want to appreciate life and see how the legal system can really mess someone up, how life can change in a moment and the person who you use to be is so gone from who you are, you cannot go back nor do you want to. This novel is a journey for survival once you have gotten into a life such as this it’s hard to turn around and go back.

Woman fatter because of...Are You Serious?

http://shine.yahoo.com/healthy-living/does-less-housework-really-equal-larger-waistline-192700982.html
Read this first

When I first looked at the title of this article I was like wow this is just another way for men to get us to do more house work. As many other woman took this article to be sexist. Though at first I kind of thought well yeah look at all the inventions that helps us get chores done faster and easier. Plus all of the technology that can distract us from the house work such as TV and the computer. Yes its true that more woman are working now, then 50 years ago but most of that work is sitting behind a computer (or less physical work) that is working our brains not our butt. Plus working more gives less time for being at home and cleaning.

It can be looked at that with all the inventions that make our lives easier, they are also making us lazier. Think about it the vacuums, Mops, dusters, disinfectant wipes, dish washer, washer and dryer, and all the other inventions that make cleaning less of a task for us. Which I find not bad, just progressive. Though our waist lines may not think so.

Have you seen the movie Wall-e? A really cute Disney film that is set in the future. Were our earth is so full of trash that it is not longer safe for humans to live there. So while Humans are in a space station for a vacation, the world is being cleaned by robots. The humans are only suppose to be on the station for a little while. Yet they stay on there for many many years, because of the easier relaxing life style. The humans are all seated in hovering chairs that take them everywhere they want to go, and have a computer screen for them to do what ever they would like (talk to others or order food). Since they do not have to get up for anything, they loose bone mass because they do not have to use their limbs for anything.

That movie popped into my mind when I read this article. With all of this technology are we helping our hurting ourselves (I believe its both) . Are we on our way to being so lazy and big that we will basically just be blobs of our former selves? I’m over reacting I know but really it’s a scary thought.

The Grand Canyon More Than Just a Pretty Site

When you visit the Grand Canyon, it sets you back on your toes. The beauty of the area is beyond words. The first time that I visited all I could think was that it looked as gorgeous as the photos. The cliffs that are formed and the colors that we see are mesmerizing.

Colors that are seen are made by the diversity of  rock that has been layered through out time. the river brought them in and over the years they just became higher and higher until its what we see now. A plethora of colors that catch the eyes with browns and different shades or red.

You may think why are the cliffs shaped as they are and not just one big cliff. The answer is the Colorado river. It moved along the sides and carved out taking as many rocks with it and forming the walls as they are now. If you get close enough to the sides you can see water waves marks as far as the eye can see and more. water carved out the Canyon that we see today.

Who would of thought that water could do so much to solid  rocks? Rock is nothing more than dust particles compacted together. And when you rush water on rocks it moves the smaller ones around. That's what it did to the Grand Canyon. It took up each rock one at a time and moved them to another location.

So next time you think that its just another site to see remember that its so much more, and took centuries to make. The amount of geology that it took to make this Canyon so breath taking is actually quit interesting. I geology class a few semesters ago and even though it was after I visited the Grand Canyon, I would have appreciated the visit even more and kind of

wish I would have known what I learned earlier.

Stafford What is he saying?

Stafford said something along the lines of “Write something that others may not like but it holds and expression”. Now it could be an expression that you had, even if others do not feel the same way. It is still something for you to remember. Most likely someone will like it and agree with you. What Stafford is saying is write what makes you feel not for others. He wrote just what came to his mind, like what he had learned and felt at a time. Even to express his message he revised his work to make it more meaning full to him, and to get as much emotion as he could out of it. The poem will be read and understood from the point of view of the writer. The reader can have his or her own reaction to it. Stafford strived to write something that made him feel, and allow the reader to decide how they feel about the poem as well. A poem more or less guides you to feel the way the writer does. How poets use their words can affect or emotion of expression of what the poem id referring to. Stafford knows this and shows how and expression can come about with just a small word.
Why not go out and write? Everyone can write its true not everyone is going to be a famous writer and have their work published. But to get your thoughts and feelings down on a page is a no brainer. What Stanford is trying to say is do not let anything keep you from writing. Whatever comes to you write down. It does not have to be for anyone but you. Do not be censored write what you want to no matter what it is. It does not matter who you are whether you like to write or not just what you need to get out let it out.

Most famous writters that we know of  today did not become famous while they were alive. Their work was published after their death. So for them what they wrote was for themselves or in the works. It could even happen to you if you just write what you feel, it may speak to others one day.

Music lover

When you were younger or maybe even now, you have gone to concerts to see/listen to a band that you like(d).  However for someone like me it is a frequent event. I love going to see my bands, seeing my concert buddies, and just letting go of the hardships for a night. Its more than just a concert its a night of freedom and happiness. These bands mean more to me than just music makers. We talk and hang out we get to know each other. They make me feel like a close friend rather than just another face in the crowd. Now I know what some of you are thinking "oh so she is a groupie". NO! I do not sleep with them or anything of that sort. I do not follow them everywhere I wait until they come to Arizona then I go see them. When the concert ends I go home and upload pictures and videos that I took of that night.

Let me explain to you more about how close I feel to my bands. I see them on face book, YouTube, twitter and any other social network. They talk about their band and keep us updated on their everyday lives. So in a way we know them because they share with us so much. Then once I get to meet them it becomes this whole new experience. Talking to them one on one and having them remember you is a wonderful feeling. Its more than just being a fan is being a supporter and a friend.

Some of the bands that I recently seen at a show is Action Item, Paradise Fears, and in 2 weeks I will be going to see Reverse Order!
