Drive-extra credit

In the movie Drive the audience can see that the main character has a secret. he gets calls in the middle of the night asking to help with a robbery; though during the day he is just a regular man who works in a garage, and has a side job of a stuntman. Something in his past made him into the best driver for both get always and stunts, but the question is where and how did he learn it? His secrets make everyone wanting to know what happens next, what other secrets will there be and will we ever be told? The secrets keep the audience wanting more.

Also in public the man is very calm and does not say much. Yet throughout the movie another side of him appears of rage, and the readiness to kill ones who threaten him of his friends. Where does this rage come from? He definitely has a shadow side and it’s terrifying. How can he kill so brutal and without a thought? He must have killed before, that caused his rage to come out. It is very unsettling to see this calm man that anyone could trust, become so violent so fast. He definitely has a secret, which has us guessing what it is throughout the movie.

The Concert Experience

One day you see that your favorite band is going on tour, and they are coming to you! OH I'm so going no matter what, is your first thought. So you buy a ticket and wait in excitement for the day to come. The wait is excruciatingly long even though it’s just a month or two it seems like eternity. In the mean time the band may come out with new material and you listen to them as much as you can until you know every word.

This band means more to you than any others; not only do you listen to their music and follow them on social networks, there is a personal connection with the members and their music. You may not have met them or be their friend, but you are a fan who cares for them and supports what they do. Their songs may have a special meaning to you, which helps you through the day or even put a smile on your face. They have now become more than just a band; they have become part of your life. To see them live with others who feel the same way as you, and to support your band is the best feeling.

Finally the concert has arrived; and knowing that you get to see your idols has you even more excited. As you stand in the crowd waiting for the show to begin your heart begins to race. Then the lights go down and screams start to rise. Your blood boils with excitement as you see your band step out into the spotlight and sing your favorite song. You cannot help but to sing along and jump to the drum beats. How amazing are they live? You never want the night to end as they sing all the best songs. As they come to the end of the show you are, sweating and tired and aching all over. Though your whole body hurts you would never trade this night for anything. You know that you could do this again in a heartbeat. Oh you hope they come back soon and you know you will be there once again.

Concerts are great stress relievers and they give a sensation of being high when there is screaming dancing and singing. On that note I’m addicted to concerts and they help me to let out my stress from the months before. I recommended at least one concert every three months. Though for me I try to have one concert a month (usually local bands). I enjoy going out seeing familiar faces and to dance my stress away. Is it wrong? I do not think so do you?

The Yellow Wall Paper

When I first read the yellow wallpaper, it was last semester in an online class so we did not discuss it at all. Which I now see was heartbreaking. I did not get the full effect of the story. Everything that we talked about in this class, I did not get while reading it the first time. Such as her being in an insane asylum or who her "family" really was around her. Also the fact that her husband/doctor had died from seeing her go insane. So many events in the story are lost if one does not discuss it with others. While reading, a reader is lazy and will just hold the first impression that he or she comes across. Once a peace is discussed and different perspectives rise; it  shines a whole new light on the story.Seeing what others got from the reading was so much more interesting than the actual read. I simply thought that she was just a sick woman who was living in a vacation home, trying to get better from depression. But talking about in class really brought out so much more for the story. Talking about it made me and probably others appreciate it more.

Can we really pull the author into this story, and see that the main character is her? Or at least she knows somewhat of the feelings and images that the main character has. I believe so; I believe that she took an event in her past and made it more interesting. I mean if you really understand what is going on in the story it is really good. Seeing the objects around her and realizing how one could go insane by just being in an enclosed room with that wall paper. There is a personal connection that is made, one that brings this peace to become so interesting.

Campbell quote

Campbell once said a quote "myths are pubic dreams; dreams are private myths". This quote really stuck out to me on how true that it can be. I know for myself my dreams never make sense when I think about it, but in the dream I think logically towards impossible things. Anything can happen in a dream and anything can happen in a myth. Myths can only go as far as our mind will go, and a mind has everything and anywhere to go to. There are no limits to an imagination, and therefore there are no limits to myths. These two links can not be separated. Our subconscious mind brings out the impossible thoughts that lead to the fascination of a great myth.

How amazing is it that the mind can have dreams tape into your subconscious and bring about this myth that can bring an emotional response. There are also studies that have been done on dreams, about what they mean. I know some people who are very serious about knowing what dreams mean. There are books out there that will show anyone what their dreams mean. I find it funny, because, most of the time my dreams do not even make sense to me or to others. I do not want to know what they mean; it’s just my mind at work trying to figure out this thing called life. Dreams are just ways our minds try to understand life, and everything in it. To help cope with situations by bringing about scenarios that help solve problems.

I asked family members “If dreams are a wish your heart makes; what is a nightmare?” They all basically answered somewhere along the lines of “something that your heart does not want.” I believe they are correct, Dreams show us what we are afraid of. You can not have good without bad and vice versa. Same goes for dreams, not all myths are good and not all dreams are good, but either way there is a lesson to be learned.

Revising 101

Revising is not my favorite part of the writing process. Once you have written a piece that you like and believe is written correctly; you find out how many mistakes you really made. In this class I have been taught many good ways to revise on my own, such as Reading it out loud to yourself or others to see which words need to be changed to flow better. Reading your paper from bottom to top can really help in the revising process as well. Also with this class I am much more aware of punctuation. And Punctuation was never something that I was called on throughout my college years.

With going to school to become a secondary education teacher this is something that I really need to focus on. I need to teach my students how to correctly punctuate; that way they are ready for college and not struggling like I am now. I was never called out on my punctuation during high school. I never really thought I was making many mistakes, which I think was very poor on my high school teachers.

Being in college and taking classes that are above 101 and 102, most mistakes are minor such as punctuation. There are so many rules to punctuation and so many can be broken. To one person your sentence is correct but to another it is not. So really knowing which punctuation is used in what kind of sentence is the trick. You know what you want to say just say it so it gives the correct meaning. Punctuation can change what is being said in a sentence, so beware.

Some rules to keep in mind during Revision are:

  • A colon {:} is used for Emphasis in a sentence
  • A comma {,} is used to separate clauses
  • A semicolon {;} is used to join big ideas
  • A dash {--} is used to add an Idea (minor)

A Place to Stand Blog

The novel A Place to Stand is an autobiography of Jimmy Santiago Baca. The novel recalls his life while growing up and how wrong events throughout his life have gone. He has to survive on his own in this world (starting at a young age), after his family abandons him. Jimmy does not always make the right decisions, but at the time, it is what is given to him. His anger with the world giving up on him upsets him more than anything. With Drugs, drinking and boredom, nothing good can come out of it.

First off let me say what a good concept of a story this is, to tell about one’s own life so that his children may know the true. He really gives the emotional feel to all of the horrible things that had gone on in his life, and let us understand why he did the things that he did. For anyone willing to read this, I would say prepare yourself for an emotional toll.

For myself I do not think I would recommend this book to others, just because of the emotional blow that comes along with reading this autobiography. I felt depressed and could not sit for long periods of time reading this. It seems like anything that was good in his life, was taken away his grandparents, his lovers, his job. Nothing seemed to work out for him in the end. His life was just one bad thing after another, and after awhile of reading it I starting to get mad and sad at Jimmy. On one Hand I was sad for him for going through so many horrible things while just a child, but mad at him for still continuing on this acts that were wrong in the first place.

This novel is written for the ones who want to appreciate life and see how the legal system can really mess someone up, how life can change in a moment and the person who you use to be is so gone from who you are, you cannot go back nor do you want to. This novel is a journey for survival once you have gotten into a life such as this it’s hard to turn around and go back.
