Woman fatter because of...Are You Serious?

Read this first

When I first looked at the title of this article I was like wow this is just another way for men to get us to do more house work. As many other woman took this article to be sexist. Though at first I kind of thought well yeah look at all the inventions that helps us get chores done faster and easier. Plus all of the technology that can distract us from the house work such as TV and the computer. Yes its true that more woman are working now, then 50 years ago but most of that work is sitting behind a computer (or less physical work) that is working our brains not our butt. Plus working more gives less time for being at home and cleaning.

It can be looked at that with all the inventions that make our lives easier, they are also making us lazier. Think about it the vacuums, Mops, dusters, disinfectant wipes, dish washer, washer and dryer, and all the other inventions that make cleaning less of a task for us. Which I find not bad, just progressive. Though our waist lines may not think so.

Have you seen the movie Wall-e? A really cute Disney film that is set in the future. Were our earth is so full of trash that it is not longer safe for humans to live there. So while Humans are in a space station for a vacation, the world is being cleaned by robots. The humans are only suppose to be on the station for a little while. Yet they stay on there for many many years, because of the easier relaxing life style. The humans are all seated in hovering chairs that take them everywhere they want to go, and have a computer screen for them to do what ever they would like (talk to others or order food). Since they do not have to get up for anything, they loose bone mass because they do not have to use their limbs for anything.

That movie popped into my mind when I read this article. With all of this technology are we helping our hurting ourselves (I believe its both) . Are we on our way to being so lazy and big that we will basically just be blobs of our former selves? I’m over reacting I know but really it’s a scary thought.

  1. It's amazing the never-ending stream of excuses people use and find to justify being obese. People are obese because they eat poorly and they do little to no physical activity. For some women cleaning is the closest thing to a workout that they get. I could easily see the correlation for some women gaining weight due to them working less around the house because I doubt most women substitute the time spent cleaning with going to the gym or something of that sort.

The Wall-E reference was good. It seems people strive to get closer to that everyday. Haha!

  2. That is so true Ali. I have pondered this myself and wonder when we will become like the movie Surrogates. In the movie, people walk around as robots that they control at home. They sit on their lazy asses and control a robot to do all their chores, work, or obligations. I really hope that technology does not become this advanced ever, but at least while I am living. I enjoy going outside and getting fresh air, or camping, or going places to see people and interact face to face; not over text, or the phone, or Facetime/Skype. Social interaction is good for everyone because we learn from it. We learn to read body language, or different tones in voices which the technology can distort and make harder for a person to read. When I read this, that movie popped into my head because yes we are becoming lazier, and America is the leader for this, unfortunately.

  3. As I read you blog, I thought about the many working class Black people I know that live much healthier lives than the wealthier white employers they did lifetimes of manual labor for. You have to deduct that it is healthier to move around and complete physical chores for yourself.

What is ironic is going to a gym or country club and see wealthy women playing tennis while 'the help' is at their homes doing all of the chores.

I don't know if I haven't purchased enough of the latest gadgets but I exhaust myself cleaning my apartment. I am the only person that lives there.

I realize the differences in sexes when my boss describes how he goes home and lists all of the movies he watches. I think to myself it must be nice to go home and have time to watch a movie. I just got a chance to watch Sparkle twice Sunday while preparing for an African dance recital. That was a treat and not the norm.

  4. As I read your blog I thought of only one thing we become as we choose. Yes the technolgy is crazy in my point, and all these new gadgets for cleaning are rediculous. I honestly prefer to clean the old fashion way mop, broom cloths, bleach and ofcourse pinesol.
Another thing people now a days are so stuck on their devices and working out through a play sation or WII. I feel that if folks have time to work,go to school and all this other stuff they can make time to work out or atleast go for walk. Stop taking the easy way out instead of stopping for fast food go straight home and cook a healthy dinner.

  5. The fact that four people responded to this blog says it all. You picked a great article to respond to. And I agree that technology is both helpful and harmful. It goes both ways. But, ooch, that original article is really designed to push buttons. The title of your blog addresses that immediately. Great job! Kimberly
